Patricia’s Canadian Best Selling Books

When I retired at the age of 49, I took a good hard look at my lifestyle and myself. I needed to make many changes, especially related to my health. It took almost a year to get healthy and fit. I completely changed my diet. I started doing Bikram’s Hot Yoga and a daily walking program. I lost almost 50 pounds and have kept it off for more than 10 years. I also examined what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Many things came out of that year of hard work and introspection. I wrote a cookbook and co-authored a lifestyle book with my physician husband. Much to our surprise, they both became Canadian Best Sellers! What fun!

Easy Low Carb Cooking

All New Easy Low-Carb Cooking

All New Easy Low-Carb Cooking is still my favourite cookbook. You will find everyday recipes using everyday ingredients (with just a few exceptions) that taste delicious and are healthy for you and your family. This cookbook has over 300 recipes from soups and salads to family meals and recipes that will delight any palate. When the books were first published in 2001, “gluten free” was a relatively novel concept, and there was no such thing as gluten-free flour. So I taught myself how to bake with ground almond and flax seed meal to create breads, muffins and desserts made without gluten. Every one of these wonderful, wholesome recipes has a full nutrition breakdown.

“This book has been a life saver for me (a diabetic). I now feel confident that I can eat low carb for the rest of my life. Her recipes are easy to follow and require normal ingredients that are easy to find in the store. My husband and children are enjoying the food as well. We don’t have to eat separate meals.”

~ Heather Cotton Mann ~

“This is by far the best low carb cookbook I’ve found. I borrowed it from the local library and liked it so much I hunted it down to purchase! This is a newer edition than the one in the library, but it has quickly gained bookmarks, notes, and, yes, a few splashes, as it has become the top “go-to” book on my recipe shelf. Thanks, Patricia Haakonson, for this great resource!”

~ North Owl ~

“I have tried so many recipes from this book and all have been so delicious! Walnut pumpkin cake is amazing! Cauliflower cheddar soup tastes like leek and potato.”

Slow Carb for Life

Slow Carb for Life

Slow Carb for Life is a very practical approach to a balanced low carb lifestyle. This volume features an overview of how and why this approach works so well, menu planning for weight loss or maintenance, how to travel and maintain a healthy diet, a carb counter, additional recipes, and some inspiring testimonials. There are no extremes here — just great food and tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and healthy weight.

“Very enjoyable read. Not a lot of technical or complicated doctor speak. Logical approach to what is important today. Getting off the white stuff, white bread, sugar, and all the stuff that is making this country so fat. My whole diet regimen has gone through a great and satisfying change. Thanks.” ~ Gilberto A. Garcia ~

“Easy to read and understand. This book offered some good eating advice with some menu tips and examples. They offer a different version of a slow carb diet than the 4 H diet. It was good.” ~ Elaine ~

“Very very happy. Much better than expected. I have read it and it has wonderful information in this book.” ~ Cheryl Hall ~
