Spring Brings Renewal
Isn’t it wonderful that April brings Easter, Passover, and Spring? I love all four seasons, but spring feels special to me. It is a time of new beginnings and renewal. After a long winter of snow where I grew up in Canada, spring was heralded by tulips, daffodils and lily of the valley poking their heads out of the ground. Then the leaves began to bud bright green on the trees and even flowers began to bud on rhododendron and fruit trees. The days are longer, the sun shines and the world seems to unfold as it should. Nature shows us that it is a time of renewal, especially in the wild. Babies are born in the animal kingdom in spring. Even in our domesticated animals, many have their babies in the spring. I love a country drive to see the new lambs, calves and colts running and jumping in the fields.
Spring is a good time to get in touch with family. For those who live close, Easter or Passover is a great reason to get together to celebrate. For those who live further away, it is just a wonderful time for a call or a card or a quick trip to visit. Family is an integral and uplifting part of who we are. Spring is a great time to strengthen those bonds and renew that sense of belonging.
Depending on what kind of climate you live in, winter may have cut down on the number of times that you were able to see friends. Now is a great time to get back into the swing of things. Book some coffee dates, lunches, shopping trips, movies, bike rides, long walks and dinners out with friends. Any excuse will do to meet up with and catch up with a friend. I once heard a very wise and successful woman say, towards the end of her life, that she made sure to keep up with family while she was busy with her career, but that sadly she let her female friends drift away. She told me this was the only regret she had as her life wound down. She had lost her husband many years before, and the end of her life was a lonely time for her. Keep up with your friends. Make them a priority in your life. We never know what life has in store for us, but we know we will always be grateful for friends.
What about those New Year Resolutions? Did you start that diet? That exercise regime? Did you join a book club? Register for a class? Start writing your memoirs? Whatever it is that you wanted to do this year, it is not too late. NOW would be a great time to get started. Don’t worry about what you haven’t done! Decide what you are going to do from today! It is never too late to take action. To make a change. To take a chance. You are worth it! You deserve to feel fulfilled and have some new and exciting things to look forward to. Whether you are 19 or 90 learning something new or starting something new brings renewal and satisfaction to our lives.
Spring is the perfect time to renew ourselves too. Especially if you live in a cold climate, you and your body deserve some pampering. Pampering doesn’t have to cost a lot. Pampering doesn’t have to be in a spa. Take one full day this month to pamper yourself. Have a long luxurious bath with bath salts. Slather some rich body cream all over your body. Use a hair mask to rejuvenate and moisturize your hair so it feels silky and smooth. Get a spring haircut. Have a massage. Go get a manicure or pedicure. Give yourself a mani and pedi and take all afternoon to do it while you listen to your favorite music. Buy that book you have been meaning to read. Take at least one full day to focus on yourself. Allow yourself to take a breath, relax and just revel in you. Then you will be ready to take on the world!
